What is required to rent a buggy?
1. Driver must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver's license. An International driving permit (IDP) valid for driving in Hawai'i is also accepted.
2. Insurance coverage is required. Please check your personal auto insurance company before your rental to confirm that your policy covers a classic V W- based dune buggy rental, including damage to the buggy and liability to others. If your personal insurance does not provide the needed coverage, additional protection can be purchased through RentalCover.com. We can also help you with this during check-in.
3. The person renting the buggy must be present at check-in to review and sign the rental agreement.
4. All drivers must be listed on the rental agreement. Only registered drivers may operate the buggy.
5. Manual transmission buggies require experience driving a stick shift. If you prefer an automatic, please reserve one of the automatic buggies.
6. A valid credit card is required at check-in for the rental agreement, security/damage authorization, and any applicable charges.
Can the Buggy be taken off road?
No, Our buggies are only permitted on paved public roadways and parking areas. All buggies are equipped with GPS, and we are notified if a buggy enters an unpaved, dirt, or lava road. A $500 charge applies for taking or attempting to take a buggy off road.
How Many People Can Fit in a Buggy?
We offer 2-seat and 4-seat buggies. Please keep in mind that these are classic dune buggies and seating is more compact than in a modern passenger vehicle. Blue Mako has smaller front and rear bench seating with lap belts and may not be comfortable for larger adults or child safety seats.
What is the Cancellation Policy?
1. Cancellations made at least 48 hours' before your scheduled rental receive a full refund. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled rental are non-refundable.
2. Multiple day rentals are charged at time of booking and are non-refundable.
3. In the event of significant inclement weather, Big Island Buggy will make a final determination on the day of the rental. Please remember Hawai'i weather can be very localized, and brief showers often pass quickly.
Accessibility & Physical Requirements
Our classic dune buggies have no doors and higher side panels than a typical passenger car. Passengers must be able to step over a side panel approximately 30 inches high to enter and exit the buggy. If you have limited mobility or difficulty lifting your legs, please contact us before booking and we'll be happy to discuss which buggy may work best for you.
Child Seats
Child safety seats may be used only in designated buggies with appropriate seating and seat belts. Big Island Buggy does not provide child safety seats. Parents or guardians are responsible for providing and properly installing an appropriate child safety seat that meets Hawai'i requirements. Please contact us before booking if you will be traveling with young children so we can help you select an appropriate buggy.
